History of Urhobo Women Association of North America (UWAONA) By Mrs. Okorefe Ester Onori, Founder On November 11, 2024, Mrs. Okorefe Ester Onori founded the Urhobo Women Association of North America (UWAONA) with a clear vision: to create a strong network of Urhobo women dedicated to community advocacy, cultural preservation, and empowerment. Having lived abroad for many years, Mrs. Onori recognized the urgent need for an organization that would bring Urhobo women together, amplify their voices, celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Urhobo people, and contribute meaningfully to local communities. Her vision was shaped by her extensive leadership experience. From 2015 to 2023, she served as President of the Urhobo Association of Georgia, as a member of the National Executive Council of the Urhobo Progress Union America (UPUA), and as a member of its Board of Trustees. She was also the only woman appointed to a four-member committee responsible for mentoring the Urhobo Progress Union America Young Adults (UPUAYA), also known as the young professionals of UPUA. A small group of committed women shared this vision and joined together to make it a reality. The journey began with Mrs. Okorefe Ester Onori, Ms. Elma Okogba-Akpojotor, Chief Mrs. Vivian Ikporo, Mrs. Gloria Akatugba, Mrs. Stella Igrubia, Mrs. Victoria Aburime, Mrs. Florence Odjodu, and Mrs. Victoria Egbujor. The founding members began by defining the association’s goals and drafting its constitution. On July 1, 2025, the association was officially registered with the Secretary of State—an important milestone that provided the organization with structure and legitimacy. The association also proudly designed its logo as a symbol of unity, heritage, and purpose. It represents the strength and resilience of Urhobo women everywhere. Within a short period, membership grew steadily to more than 80 dedicated women across North America. Chief Dr. Mrs. Louisa Ukochovwera became a powerful force in advancing the association’s growth. Together, the members have built a vibrant organization focused on advocacy, education, empowerment, and cultural pride. Through meetings, programs, and community outreach, UWAONA continues to promote the welfare of women, encourage leadership, and preserve the beauty of the Urhobo language, values, and traditions for future generations. As it looks toward the future, the Urhobo Women Association of North America remains committed to expanding its membership, strengthening partnerships, and organizing meaningful programs and advocacy events that uplift women and celebrate Urhobo identity. The association’s journey has only just begun, but its purpose is clear: to unite, empower, and make a lasting impact in communities across North America and in the Urhobo homeland. Executive Council The association’s first Executive Council was established and formally approved by the general membership on September 21, 2025. Its members are dedicated individuals who volunteered to provide leadership and advance the mission of the association. Core Values: 1.
